DORCHESTER ARTS • September 2010 – July 2011 •
Led by percussionist Lekan Babalola, a protégé of Fela Kuti, the Wessex Afrobeat Ensemble will be a collective of Wessex musicians. They will meet on a weekly basis to re-create both vintage Afrobeat Fela and English folk song music arranged on an Afrobeat groove.
The Ensemble will provide a base for musicians, young musicians and semi-professional musicians to learn about Afrobreat. The weekly open session is aimed at any musicians from the community playing at any level.
The Ensemble will run a monthly Afrobeat nights in Dorchester and Yeovil and will include pre-performance workshops to involve the wider community.
Hot on the heels of hip-hop, drum n’ bass and Acid Jazz, Afrobeat is a genre that is currently becoming very popular among dance music goers.
